HEEF hosted Sixth Annual Career Day – November 1-2, 2012
The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation hosted its sixth annual Career Day event on November 1-2, 2012.
One hundred students from schools across the Midwest, including DePaul University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Indiana University, Notre Dame, John Marshall Law School, Marquette University, and University of Wisconsin, gathered for this two day event. Career Day is an educational outreach forum designed for young people who are looking to build a career in real estate.
The experience included site tours of the Trump Tower and of 350 W. Hubbard. Career Day also featured a Young Guns Panel and Networking Dinner at Gino’s East, where students learned about career paths from some of the brightest young “stars” in the real estate field. The experience ended with a Roundtable Luncheon, where students had the opportunity to have intimate discussions with over 20 of the city’s top real estate professionals, and a Career/Internship Fair.
“Career Day allows college students to receive a 24-hour hands-on immersion in the real working world of Chicago real estate,” said Katie Wales, Executive Director of the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation.
“I learned more in the last 24 hours than I have in all my classes,” said one student.

Marquette University Wins 2012 Midwest Real Estate Challenge
The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation sponsored and hosted its second annual Midwest Real Estate Challenge at the Union League Club of Chicago from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. Students from DePaul University, Indiana University, Marquette University, Roosevelt University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign competed against each other through a live presentation and written report containing development plans for the US Steel Southworks site in Chicago.
Three judges – David Doig, President of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, and former head of the Chicago Park District, First Deputy Commissioner at Chicago Department of Planning, and Deputy Commissioner Department of Housing; Alby Gallun, Reporter for Crain’s Chicago Business; and Lee Reid, Architect and President of Revere Properties – reviewed all of the presentations and then awarded Marquette University’s team with the best overall plan.
“This year’s competition gave college students an opportunity to receive hands-on experience creating a development plan for a very unique space,” said Weston Harding, Associate Board Member of The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation.
The winning team from Marquette University was comprised of students Maggie Brueggen, Nick Koglin, Kyle McElwee and Joe McWeeney. In addition to a trophy, the students received an invitation to The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation’s Annual Dinner, which attracts hundreds of the nation’s leading real estate executives. Also, Marquette University will receive a $4,000 scholarship.
This year’s event would not be possible without the generosity of McCaffery Interests and US Steel.
