Roosevelt University Wins HEEF Midwest Real Estate Challenge
The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation sponsored and hosted its third annual Midwest Real Estate Challenge at the Standard Club of Chicago from 12:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6. Students from University of Pennsylvania, DePaul University, Indiana University, University of Notre Dame, Marquette University, Roosevelt University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign competed against each other through a live presentation and written report containing development plans for the 33 acre site at 62nd and Western Avenue in the Marquette Gardens/Chicago Lawn neighborhood on Chicago’s south side.
Four judges – Curt Bailey, President of Related Midwest; Cortez Carter, Managing Deputy Commissioner at the City of Chicago’s Department of Aviation; Al Klairmont, President of Imperial Realty; and Micah Maidenberg, Crain’s Chicago Business Reporter– reviewed all of the presentations and then awarded Roosevelt’s team with the best overall plan.
“This year’s competition gave college students an opportunity to receive hands-on experience creating a development plan for a very unique space,” said Jenna Goebig, Associate Board Member of The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation.
The winning team was comprised of students Moruf Animashaun, Karlen Beitman, Jessica Caffrey, Holly Kavis, David Lambiaso, Nida Mehtab, Chase Morris, Sarah Rothman, Andrew Savoy, and Drakia Wilkins. In addition to a trophy, the students received an invitation to attend and receive acknowledgement at the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation’s Annual Dinner on October 1, 2013, This event attracts hundreds of the nation’s leading real estate executives. Additionally, Roosevelt University received a $5,000 scholarship.

On October 24-25, 2013, HEEF will host its Seventh Annual Career Day. Over 100 students will gather in Chicago for this 24-hour immersion in the real working world of real estate. Career Day is part of the Foundation’s educational outreach programs aimed to promote real estate students and give them an opportunity to connect with working professionals and experiences.

HEEF hosted Sixth Annual Career Day – November 1-2, 2012
The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation hosted its sixth annual Career Day event on November 1-2, 2012.
One hundred students from schools across the Midwest, including DePaul University, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Indiana University, Notre Dame, John Marshall Law School, Marquette University, and University of Wisconsin, gathered for this two day event. Career Day is an educational outreach forum designed for young people who are looking to build a career in real estate.
The experience included site tours of the Trump Tower and of 350 W. Hubbard. Career Day also featured a Young Guns Panel and Networking Dinner at Gino’s East, where students learned about career paths from some of the brightest young “stars” in the real estate field. The experience ended with a Roundtable Luncheon, where students had the opportunity to have intimate discussions with over 20 of the city’s top real estate professionals, and a Career/Internship Fair.
“Career Day allows college students to receive a 24-hour hands-on immersion in the real working world of Chicago real estate,” said Katie Wales, Executive Director of the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation.
“I learned more in the last 24 hours than I have in all my classes,” said one student.

Fourteenth Annual Dinner – A Record Breaking Success!
On October 2, 2012, the Foundation hosted its SOLD OUT 14th Annual Dinner. Over 550 guests joined us at the Standard Club in Chicago for an evening of food, friends and fun. The night began with a cocktail hour where guests enjoyed the opportunity to socialize and connect before heading up to a delicious gourmet dinner followed by a networking dessert.
The best part? The Annual Dinner raised almost $250,000 and proceeds go towards the Foundation’s programs in gastrointestinal cancer research and real estate education.
Highlights from this year’s dinner included a HEEF Faculty Education award, presented to Marquette University’s Andrew Hunt for all he does to promote real estate education, the announcement of our 2012 scholarship recipient, Thomas McGovern, the presentation of the ICSC Scholarship to Ryan Holzhauer, the presentation of a very large trophy to our HEEF Midwest Real Estate Challenge winners from Marquette, and the debut of our new video. The dinner also featured an exciting MINI Cooper raffle and a silent auction.
The Annual Dinner is our most significant fundraiser. We depend on it to fund our programs. Because of the overwhelming support of the real estate community, we had the most successful dinner in the Foundation’s history. Thanks to you, it is going to be a very good year.

Marquette University Wins 2012 Midwest Real Estate Challenge
The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation sponsored and hosted its second annual Midwest Real Estate Challenge at the Union League Club of Chicago from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. Students from DePaul University, Indiana University, Marquette University, Roosevelt University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign competed against each other through a live presentation and written report containing development plans for the US Steel Southworks site in Chicago.
Three judges – David Doig, President of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, and former head of the Chicago Park District, First Deputy Commissioner at Chicago Department of Planning, and Deputy Commissioner Department of Housing; Alby Gallun, Reporter for Crain’s Chicago Business; and Lee Reid, Architect and President of Revere Properties – reviewed all of the presentations and then awarded Marquette University’s team with the best overall plan.
“This year’s competition gave college students an opportunity to receive hands-on experience creating a development plan for a very unique space,” said Weston Harding, Associate Board Member of The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation.
The winning team from Marquette University was comprised of students Maggie Brueggen, Nick Koglin, Kyle McElwee and Joe McWeeney. In addition to a trophy, the students received an invitation to The Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation’s Annual Dinner, which attracts hundreds of the nation’s leading real estate executives. Also, Marquette University will receive a $4,000 scholarship.

Eisenopoly 2012 – A Huge Success!
Thank you to everyone who supported our Third Annual Eisenopoly event on JANUARY 27, 2012!
The event raised over $35,000 and was completely SOLD-OUT with well over 400 guests. HEEF Hosts Fifth Annual Career Day
On October 13-14, 2011, HEEF hosted its Fifth Annual Career Day. Over 85 students gathered in Chicago for this 24-hour immersion in the real working world of real estate. Career Day is part of the Foundation’s educational outreach programs aimed to promote real estate students and give them an opportunity to connect with working professionals and experiences.
This year’s Career Day experience included a Fireside Chat with Richard Stein, Senior Managing Director of Mesirow Financial, followed by a tour of 353 N. Clark Street, as well as a site tour of 111 W. Wacker Drive (an active construction site), followed by a discussion with Don Biernacki, President of Related Midwest, who recently acquired the distressed property. It also featured a Young Guns Panel and Networking Dinner at Edwardo’s Pizza, where students learned about career paths from some of the brightest young “stars” in the real estate field. The Young Guns Panelists included Matt Darin (Frontline Real Estate Partners), Brandon Duff (Stan Johnson Company), Emily Slovitt (Prudential Mortgage Capital Company) and Mike Reed (Supervalu). The experience ended with a Roundtable Luncheon where students had the opportunity to have intimate discussions with over 20 of the city’s top real estate professionals.

Thirteenth Annual Dinner – A Huge Success
Oh, what a night! On October 4, 2011, the Foundation hosted its 13th Annual Dinner. Almost 500 guests joined us at the Standard Club in Chicago for an evening of food, friends and fun. The night began with a cocktail hour where guests enjoyed the opportunity to socialize and connect before heading up to a delicious gourmet dinner followed by a networking dessert.
The best part? The Annual Dinner raised an estimated $130,000 to fund the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation GI Cancer Tissue Bank at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The Bank is a tumor tissue repository that allows Dr. Benson and his staff to perform clinical trials and cutting-edge research aimed at advancing treatment methods and saving patients’ lives.
Highlights from this year’s dinner included a surprise award, presented to Professor Roger Cannaday for all he does to promote real estate education, the announcement of our 2011 scholarship recipients, and the debut of our new video. The dinner also featured an exciting raffle and Wine Lottery. The raffle prizes included a MINI Cooper, a Chicago Sports Package, a Golf Package and a Private Tour of the ESPN Studios with Jeremy Schaap. The Wine Lottery gave guests the opportunity to purchase a great bottle of Terlato wine and with it, a chance to win one of several great prizes, including a two-night stay at any Hyatt and a $1,000 gift certificate to Lester Lampert Jewelers
The success of the Annual Dinner and, in fact, the Foundation as a whole, is due to the unwavering support of the real estate community. Team Eisenberg Rocks!

Over twenty Team Eisenberg Members ran the Rock n Roll Half Marathon on August 14, 2011. In addition to having a great time, they raised over $10,000 all of which will be used to fight gastrointestinal cancer.
The night before the big race, HEEF hosted a pasta dinner for the runners so that they’d have plenty of energy. Despite the threat of rain, the cheering squad was full of energy and there to support the runners all the way to the finish line.
